Safety Committee Meeting

Minutes
Meeting called to order by Chairman S. Sherwood at 1335; Safety Committee Members present were D. Chavenello, R. Demko, R. Smith, C. Tracy; Also present were E. McKeon, K. Polcer.
Agendas were distributed.
Chairman Sherwood noted previous minutes posted online, and reiterated the need for a Committee Secretary; Tracy offered to take minutes for current meeting.
Safety Officer Chavenello spoke on minor fall accident at furnace fire.
Safety Concern Subcommittee Chair Homa said no new or pending Safety Concern Forms outstanding; a prior concern seeking a response policy for incidents on I-95 or the Merritt Parkway was discussed, with the informal resolve to leave it at the officer and driver’s discretion. Another prior concern regarding equipment mounting on apparatus was discussed, with a temporary fix of netting separating passenger and equipment areas on Rescue 1 suggested; further discussion ensued regarding all loose equipment and personal items, with the resolution that the Mechanics have equipment mounting on their priority list and members must secure their own belongings to ensure the safety of all.
Old Business: Avian Flu Update – vaccine may be pending, with members encouraged to remain vigilant for educational information regarding this matter. Exposure Reporting (environmental/chemical v. medical/biological) – Chairman Sherwood has revised the form for review, and DC Reid will check with Risk Management re medical checkups. On a peripheral note, Demko requested an update on maintenance shop’s MSDS sheets. [Chief Felner joined meeting] Hearing Protection Policy – discussion on need for mandatory policy in responding and/or routine travel and responsibility of Union Safety Committee v. Department Policy in setting and enforcing safety equipment implementation and use.
New Business: Apparatus & Equipment – E4 being fixed, E3 coming in on time, L2 back in town from repair; extended discussion on apparatus safety and PM needs, with question raised how we can help solve maintenance issues.
